Are Cover Letters Necessary? Here’s Why They May No Longer Be Essential in Recruitment

04 December 2024

In today’s fast-paced hiring environment, cover letters might just be a thing of the past.

Traditionally, cover letters were seen as an important piece of a candidate’s application, offering insight into personality, communication style, and motivation for a role. However, here at Hello HR & Recruitment we believe they may be unnecessary most of the time!  A well written CV will showcase your skills & experience and an in-depth phone screen will help us understand you better and ascertain whether you would be a good fit for the company we’re recruiting for.

We believe the majority of the time the focus should be on:

✅Perfecting your CV to highlight key achievements, skills and position overviews
✅Being prepared for meaningful conversations during the recruitment process
✅Understanding the position and company you are applying to work with

However, there are some instances where a cover letter may be called for. Situations where these may be applicable are:

✅When the advert asks for one!
✅When you would like to highlight specific reasons for career changes or unconventional career changes
✅To demonstrate your passion for a particular company based on their ethics or mission, or simply for what they do!

At Hello HR & Recruitment, we’re all about people first. Our focus is on understanding each candidate’s story through direct interaction and conversation.
